A micro-louver filter is sealed inside the film. It works like microscopic vertical blinds, letting light out towards you but blocking it from travelling sideways. Head-on your screen looks normal; from roughly 30 degrees to either side it goes dark. The person standing beside you on the bus or sitting next to you at work cannot read it.

Privacy hydrogels are not guaranteed to work with in-display fingerprint sensors. The anti-spy filter layer sits between your finger and the sensor and can stop it reading through. This applies to privacy protectors as a category — privacy tempered glass has the same limitation. Every non-privacy hydrogel we sell is completely fine with fingerprint sensors, so if fingerprint unlock matters more to you than privacy, choose the standard Hydrogel Protector instead.

Slightly, yes — head-on it is a little dimmer, and most people raise their brightness one step after fitting it. That dimming is the filter doing exactly what you bought it for: blocking light that was heading sideways. If you mostly use your phone at home, a standard protector will give you a brighter screen for less money.

The privacy effect is the same idea; the material is not. Privacy glass is rigid and cut flat, so it is at its best on a flat screen and cannot sit flat on a curved one. This is flexible hydrogel film, so it wraps a curved edge, cannot shatter or crack, sits thinner under a case, and comes in Matte as well as Gloss. Privacy glass is sold in gloss only.

Both have identical privacy and identical protection. Gloss gives you the sharpest, most colour-accurate view from your own seat — better for video and photos. Matte is anti-glare, hides fingerprints and gives you that smooth glide under the thumb, which is why gamers ask for matte by name for PUBG. If you play, take Matte.

This is the easy-application build, designed so that you don’t. The backing under the film is split into two separate pieces rather than one sheet, so you place the film on your screen with the adhesive still fully covered, get the cutouts lined up, and only then peel the first piece and squeegee that half down. The second piece slides out from underneath and you finish the other half. Because you are only ever working across one half at a time, the air is pushed ahead of the squeegee and out of the edge instead of being trapped in the middle — and right up until you commit, you can lift the film and straighten it. A squeegee, an alcohol wipe and a cleaning cloth are in the box.
