How to Apply Your Snap Skins
Step-by-step instructions for bubble-free, professional-looking installation in just 5 minutes.
Before You Start
Applying a Snap Skins device skin is easy when you follow these simple steps. Here’s what you’ll need:
What You’ll Need:
- Your Snap Skins device skin
- Microfiber cloth (included in the package)
- Isopropyl alcohol wipe or screen cleaner
- Squeegee (for smoothing)
- Hair dryer or heat gun (optional, for curves)
Important Tips:
- Work in a clean, dust-free environment
- Wash and dry your hands thoroughly
- Remove any old skins or screen protectors first
- Take your time – rushing leads to bubbles!
Step-by-Step Installation
Step 1: Clean Your Device
Use an isopropyl alcohol wipe or screen cleaner to thoroughly clean your device’s surface. Remove all dust, fingerprints, and oils. Let it dry completely (30 seconds).
Pro Tip: Wipe in one direction to avoid spreading dirt around.
Step 2: Identify Skin Pieces
Your SnapSkins package may contain multiple pieces:
- Main back piece: Largest piece covering the device back
- Side pieces: For device edges (if applicable)
- Camera/logo cutouts: Small decorative pieces
Lay out all pieces on a clean surface and identify each one before starting.
Step 3: Align the Main Piece
Peel back about 1 inch of the backing liner from the top edge of the skin. Do not remove the entire backing yet!
Align the exposed adhesive edge with the top of your device, making sure:
- Camera cutout lines up perfectly
- Edges are parallel to device borders
- Skin is centered left-to-right
Step 4: Apply the Skin
Once aligned, press down the top edge firmly. Then:
- Slowly peel away more backing (1-2 inches at a time)
- Use your finger or a credit card to smooth the skin down
- Work from top to bottom, pushing out air bubbles as you go
- Continue peeling and smoothing until the entire skin is applied
Pro Tip: If you see a bubble, lift that section and reapply. The air-release adhesive makes repositioning easy!
Step 5: Smooth Out Bubbles
Use a credit card or squeegee to push any remaining air bubbles toward the edges:
- Start from the center and work outward
- Use firm, even pressure
- Small bubbles (pinhead-sized) will disappear within 24-48 hours
Step 6: Apply Side Pieces (If Included)
For skins with side pieces:
- Align each piece with the device edge
- Press firmly, starting from one end
- Use gentle heat (hair dryer on low) to help the vinyl conform to curves
- Smooth out any wrinkles or bubbles
Step 7: Final Touches
Once all pieces are applied:
- Run your finger around all edges to ensure adhesion
- Check camera and port cutouts for alignment
- Wipe away any fingerprints with a microfiber cloth
- Let the skin set for 1 hour before heavy use
Advanced Tips for Perfect Application
Dealing with Curves & Edges
If your device has curved edges (like most phones):
- Use a hair dryer on low heat to warm the vinyl
- Warm vinyl is more flexible and stretches slightly
- Apply heat for 5-10 seconds, then press down firmly
- Don’t overheat – the vinyl should be warm to touch, not hot
Removing Stubborn Bubbles
If you have bubbles that won’t smooth out:
- Carefully lift the skin from the nearest edge
- Peel back just enough to reach the bubble
- Smooth out the area
- Press down firmly and re-smooth
Repositioning the Skin
Our air-release adhesive allows repositioning within the first few minutes:
- Peel up gently from the misaligned area
- Realign carefully
- Press down firmly
- You can reposition 2-3 times without losing adhesion
Troubleshooting Common Issues
Issue: Skin Won’t Stick
Cause: Device surface not clean or oily
Solution: Remove skin, clean device thoroughly with alcohol, let dry completely, reapply
Issue: Bubbles Won’t Go Away
Cause: Air trapped under adhesive
Solution: Use a pin to poke tiny hole in bubble, then smooth out with credit card. Or lift and reapply section.
Issue: Skin Looks Wrinkled
Cause: Vinyl stretched or not warmed enough on curves
Solution: Apply gentle heat with hair dryer, smooth out wrinkles while warm
Issue: Edges Lifting
Cause: Not enough pressure or heat applied at edges
Solution: Press edges firmly with your finger for 10-15 seconds. Apply heat if needed.
Removing Your Skin
When it’s time to change designs:
- Start at a corner and gently lift the edge
- Peel slowly at a 45-degree angle
- Use heat (hair dryer) to soften adhesive if needed
- The skin should come off cleanly without residue
- If any adhesive remains, wipe with isopropyl alcohol
